Not Your Usual Bedtime Story.

Arrow was not scared of monsters hiding under his bed. He was scared of the tall, muscular figures that had come into his room many times before. He was scared of the figures' machines, which could blow up an entire building and cause more harm than fangs and claws. He was scared of the figures' vehicles, which carried people away to places that were more dangerous and foreign than other dimensions. He was scared of the figures who had beaten and harmed his older sister before taking her away in the gigantic vehicles. He was scared of their brutal strength and unknown weapons that had hurt his father to death.
Arrow was not scared of a monster's snarl either. He was scared of the figures' voices and how they made his mother scream. He was afraid of the noise when the figures arrived: alarms ringing, bombs blasting, planes rumbling, buildings crashing, and orders blending with cries for mercy. He was scared also of the silence when they left, the mute sound of defeat and death, and the smell of blood and smoke that lingered the streets.
Unlike any other child, Arrow was not scared of monsters grabbing his foot while he slept. Instead, he feared humans would take his life away while he was awake.

Honestly and sadly inspired by recent events in Aleppo, Siria.
